Today’s sketch features my lovely wife as depicted with sloppy washes of cerulean blue and cadmium orange. It is pretty cool the way the pigments will separate somewhat in the pools of color.

In this instance, I found my wife transfixed whilst playing “Patapon 2″ on her Playstation Portable ( aka. “PSP” or “Pisp” as my wife likes to call it…).

Funny how a silly game can create a classically serious expression.

By curious coincidence, a portrait of Fafa created by my young nephew, Cian, also arrived in the mail today after I completed today’s warm-up.

I think Cian did a better job of it. :)

Today’s sketch incorporates both watercolor and a smidgeon of sketchy watercolor pencil. Raw sienna, cerulean blue, and chinese white along with some cedar green pencil.

Today the illustration class and I will be discussing light, value, and pencil rendering.

We will also do a bit of critique. Should be a fun session.

In other news—-

I received word from friend and writer, Ron Fortier, that an anthology book I had the pleasure of working on with him has been released. Ron is a long time comics and pulps writer of tremendous talent and passion.

Today’s sketch was executed in one hour on cold-pressed watercolor paper.

Ultramarine blue and raw sienna.

It’s nice to be building some momentum once again on the daily sketches.

My friend, Ralph Horsley, has produced a nice new fantasy painting that marks a transition in his work. Well worth checking out!

Burnt umber, ultramarine blue, chinese white, 9×12 –140 lb cold press paper.

This was a tad over an hour I believe.

I seem to have regained control of my studio schedule and can now finally get back to work!

Today’s sketch took precisely one hour. I timed myself more carefully than normal.

Wednesday evening saw the first meeting of my illustration class at Southern New Hampshire University. It is a talented bunch of students and I foresee a great time ahead with them as we explore as many facets of the craft as we can cram into a weekly gathering.

Lots of work ahead for all of us, but it is going to be a great time.

If my students are reading this today—Get to work! You have sketches,  a one-page written assignment, and TWO line drawings!! That cracking sound behind you is the whip in my hand! MUSH! :)

Now I must prepare an in-depth presentation and discussion of light and shade along with pencil rendering. This will be coupled with numerous projects that are in various stages of development.

Hey everyone!
My first sketchbook collection of daily warm-ups is now here!

Daily Warm-Ups Volume 1 is 8.5 x 8.5 inches square,  full color with 20 pages of my favorite color sketches as featured here on the blog.
I hope you will consider adding it to your collection. :)
It has been very busy here in the studio of late–hence my serious lack of update these days.
Work was completed this week on a series of black and white illustrations for Headless Hydra Games.
As soon as the book comes out, I’ll be sure to share them here on the blog.
I have completed my course syllabus for the Illustration class I will be teaching this fall at Southern New Hampshire University. The class currently has 12-13 students enrolled which is awesome considering it is the first time this discipline has been taught on campus.  I am very excited to get started.
The first lesson will be held on Wednesday evening ( September 7th).
Can’t wait!
Now all I need is a tweed jacket with corduroy patches on the elbows and a pipe…that blows bubbles.

Back in the saddle with the daily warm-ups ( for today any way…gads I’m busy-like).

Any way, I wondered what a metro-sexual, Starbucks drinking, chain-smoker would look like….in a zombified state.

Not sure I did it justice with this quick treatment, but hey….

This was executed in acrylic on illustration board.

Lava Elves! New art…

The Lava Elves cometh...

Today’s installment is the latest artwork completed for Dragon Dice.

The Lava Elves!

This week I am assembling a lesson plan for a university illustration course.

The challenge will be in creating assignments designed to teach the elements of good illustration to students who may not have had extensive training in drawing and painting at the university level.

The students who’ve signed up for the course surely feel up to the challenge, so I am not nervous about it, but I do want to be certain that they get the most they can out of the course.

This weekend was spent exhibiting art at OGC ( Open Gaming Convention) alongside my buddy, Don Higgins of “Dark Magic and Donuts“.

Many laughs were had. Of that you may be certain. :)

Now it is time to proceed to the day’s work.

The paintings don’t finish themselves, sadly…lazy sods…..

New Dragon Dice artwork. The Coral Elves!

Yesterday saw me out in the sun most of the day applying graphics to a box van and not in the air conditioned confines of my studio, sadly. No time for blog posting!

But today sees me back in the studio ( at least for a few minutes) so I can share this new painting with you for Dragon Dice! This one features the Coral Elves.

It is 18×30  inches on Strathmore 500 vellum finish illustration board.

Acrylics.

Yum.

I’ll be back on Monday with the Lava Elves for your viewing pleasure.

New art for Dragon Dice. The Dragon and the Golem…

This is the first of three images that debuted at GenCon for the upcoming new line of Dragon Dice gaming products. I’ll post the other two over the next couple of days.

This one is 16×24 inches in size and has inspired me to work larger from here on.

Acrylics on Strathmore 500 illustration board ( vellum finish).

I do love me some big dragons. This one received some nice compliments from con-goers. The level of detail on the dragon in particular won high praise. I credit working larger with allowing me to invest plenty of detail in this fellow.

It is great having plenty of room for brushwork. I have put away the jeweler’s loop and my 0000000000000 sized brush ( fashioned from my own eyelashes—it’ll be great to have them grow back).

More on the way tomorrow!
